Food safety company Mérieux NutriSciences has completed its acquisition of the food testing operations of Bureau Veritas in Japan, Morocco, Southeast Asia, and South Africa.

This development follows the recent closures of deals in Canada and the US.

This latest acquisition is part of a larger agreement with France-based Bureau Veritas, covering global food laboratory testing activities, including microbiological, chemical, and molecular analysis.

In October 2024, Mérieux NutriSciences agreed to buy the food testing business of Bureau Veritas at an enterprise value of €360m.

Bureau Veritas is a certification company that specialises in testing, inspection, and certification in various industry sectors.

The acquisition strengthens Mérieux NutriSciences’ position in global food testing, inspection, and certification (TIC).

It will help Mérieux NutriSciences to bolster its presence in Japan, Morocco, and Southeast Asia, while enhancing its South African capabilities with the addition of pharmaceutical testing solutions.

The acquisition adds over 500 new employees and eight laboratories to its global network.

Mérieux NutriSciences CEO Nicolas Cartier said: “We are thrilled to have achieved this important step in our global deal with Bureau Veritas.

“Today, we significantly enhance our ability to deliver high-value, science-based solutions to our customers and the food industry at large across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

“I warmly welcome our new colleagues in these regions and look forward to working together to advance our mission of creating a better world, serving our customers, and growing our people.”

Mérieux NutriSciences operates as part of a joint venture (JV) with New Zealand-based food assurance services provider AsureQuality in Southeast Asia.

The JV, currently trading as BVAQ, combines both firms’ expertise to advance food safety, quality, and sustainability.
