Centrum, a US-based multivitamin brand of Haleon, announced that the consumption of its Centrum Silver multivitamin supplement supports cognitive health in healthy older adults.
The announcement is based on results from the recent Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) studies in 5,200 individuals, aged 60 years and above.
COSMOS constitute three independent studies, COSMOS Mind, COSMOS Web, and COSMOS Clinic, and their findings were consolidated under a meta-analysis.
In the studies, older adults who consumed multivitamin-mineral (MVM) supplementation daily, for at least 2 years had improved cognitive function compared to those who took a placebo.
The COSMOS study data defines cognitive function as an age-related health issue.
It provides suggestive evidence that taking daily multivitamin supplements, such as Centrum Silver, can support cognition amongst healthy older adults.
Haleon Southeast Asia and Taiwan medical and scientific affairs director Vandana Garg said: “Cognitive health is defined as the ability to think, learn, and remember, and is an important component of performing everyday activities.
“Ultimately, this ability is an essential component of healthy ageing. However, age-related cognitive decline amongst ageing adults may be primarily due to lack of a balanced nutrition, in addition to other factors.
“Cognitive health can be supported with MVM supplementation. Coupled with regular exercise, good nutrition, and overall healthy lifestyle habits, incorporating multivitamins into one’s health regimen can support them to age well and maintain a better quality of life.”
According to the company, age-related cognitive decline amongst ageing adults is primarily due to lack of a balanced nutrition, in addition to other factors.
Cognitive decline is considered a critical age-related health issue in Singapore, owing to its ageing population, and multivitamin supplements are believed to support cognitive health.
Centrum said that its parent Haleon is working in collaboration with the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine on a large-scale human clinical trial.
The clinical trial aims to test the effect of multivitamins and minerals to support healthy ageing.
In addition to the ongoing research collaborations, Centrum is also planning to begin a nationwide drive across retailers and healthcare partners, starting this month.
National University of Singapore (NUS) Oon Chiew Seng Professor Andrea Maier said: “The COSMOS study is relevant to Singapore, where healthy ageing is firmly positioned at the forefront of national priorities.
“In line with this, we at the NUS, in collaboration with Haleon, are focused on understanding how supplements can play a vital role in supporting a healthy lifespan.”
