Amulet, a biotechnology research company that develops sensors to detect food allergens, has raised $5.8m in Series A financing.

The funding round was led by HealthX Ventures. Entities such as Incite Ventures, AllerFund, Mendota Venture Capital, Great Oaks Venture Capital, and several individual investors also joined.

Based in Madison in the US state of Wisconsin, Amulet develops portable food allergen sensing products for individuals and businesses.

The sensors are equipped with rapid, on-site molecular detection technology that can help in identifying allergens, toxins, and contaminants in food.

The company has developed Allergy Amulet, a consumer wearable that can be used by people to test for food allergens on the go.

It also developed Amulet Scientific for restaurants, suppliers, manufacturers, and other food industry businesses to identify several food toxins and environmental contaminants.

The new funding will enable the company to carry out a full product launch for its waitlist. A portion of the funding will also be used by Amulet to grow its team and expand its detection portfolio.

Amulet founder and CEO Abigail Barnes said: “Amulet’s technology has the potential to improve the safety of our food systems and, by extension, the health and well-being of millions.

“From gluten to glyphosate in our food and soil, this funding will allow us to deploy rapid detection for both consumers and businesses to help ensure a safer food supply chain and reduce adverse health outcomes for the food allergy, food intolerant, and celiac populations.”

HealthX Ventures’ Mark Bakken said: “We strive to support digital innovations that make healthcare easier and more affordable. There’s no doubt that what Amulet is creating is a much-needed product for the hundreds of millions globally managing food allergies, celiac disease, food intolerances, and the countless businesses that strive to serve them.

“We look forward to supporting Amulet through this next stage of growth as they bring their innovation to market.”
