Australian chemical company Nufarm has received the Health Canada approval for Nutriterra Total Omega-3 for use an ingredient in dietary supplements.

The Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) issued product licence NPN 80136254, authorising its marketing and sale as a canola-based total omega-3 oil.

Nutriterra is a source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, derived from proprietary Omega-3 Canola, a plant-based omega-3.

Designed for human nutrition, it offers a sustainable alternative to traditional omega-3 sources.

This oil supports heart health, normal brain function, and cardiovascular health.

It is a source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), essential for maintaining good health.

Nutriterra Total Omega-3 is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids for overall health maintenance.

Nufarm nutritional general manager Benita Boettner said: “Health Canada’s approval recognises Nutriterra’s ability to support heart and brain health and provides a new option to meet the growing demand for plant-based total omega-3 with DHA, EPA, and ALA.”

According to Nufarm, human clinical trials have confirmed that Nutriterra’s long-chain fatty acids are easily incorporated into blood lipids.

A daily serving of 2000 mg of Nutriterra significantly improved omega-3 status indicators, including the OmegaScore and Omega-3 Index. These improvements support cardiovascular and brain health.

Boettner said: “With Health Canada’s approval for Nutriterra as a safe and effective dietary ingredient, we are well placed to attract new consumers and raise consumption of omega-3 closer to the recommended daily intake.”

This Health Canada approval follows the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s 2020 approval of Nutriterra for food and feed applications, offering greater formulation flexibility for customers.

Omega-3 Canola addresses the gap between the omega-3 required for human health and the limited supply from ocean sources, the Australian company said.

This approval builds on Nutriterra’s 2021 US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) New Dietary Ingredient status and previous food approvals in Australia, New Zealand, the US, and Canada.

The company is advancing regulatory applications in other key markets globally.
